Minka came to me without a name, a concept, or a visual identity. The brief: design a digital platform for apartment building residents to collaborate in their everyday lives, sharing tools, asking for help, building the kind of community that makes living close to others genuinely useful. The starting point was a single idea: community as daily practice.
The Name
The name comes from Minka (also written Minga), a pre-Columbian tradition of voluntary collective work still active across Latin America. In the south of Chile, Minga describes the practice of moving an entire house from one location to another using a system of rollers and oxen, with the whole community pulling together. A word that already meant community long before the app existed.
The Mark
Two decisions define the wordmark. Three dots above the letters i and n represent the minimum number of people needed to form a community. The letter "a" carries a -10° angle, a direct reference to the Minga tradition: the mark leans into the effort of collective movement.
The System
Minka Violet as the primary surface, coral as the accent: a palette that reads as modern and approachable without defaulting to the generic visual language of community apps. Montserrat in four weights, from Light to Extrabold, gives the system enough range to work across app interfaces and physical applications. The app icon keeps the same logic as the full wordmark: the letter m with three dots above, readable at any size.
The Result
A full identity: naming, wordmark, app icon, color system, typography and brand guidelines, production-ready for a development handoff.
